Caslte Torgeath

Castle Torgeath is a dungeon crawling RPG with a decidedly old-school feel. Don't let the dated graphics fool you, because developers Dungeoneering Studios have created a unique, atmoshperic experience quite unlike any other available today.

The graphics may look dated by today's standards, which will either come across as weird and out of place in today's market or pleasantly nostalgic, if you are an older gamer. Whatever the case may be, it would be wise to look past the obvious because if you do so, you might be surprised to find just how engrossing Castle Torgeath can be.

After adding some basic (and purely aesthetic) customizations to our character, we begin just inside the gates of Caslte Torgeath, led there by the promise of gold and other riches. Almost immediately however, a grim situation unfolds as you find yourself trapped inside the unmapped innards of a dark castle with all-too-unfriendly resident creatures just dying to make a meal of you.

The story (which is told mostly through diaries and notes) begins to unfold quickly and you learn that the castle is many hundreds of years older than previously thought. As well as that, the previous occupants were suddenly put into a state of panic due to some as-yet-unknown event. You'll need to follow the clues to the hidden exit, avoiding traps and surviving battles with increasingly powerful creatures along the way. The riches you came here for can certainly be found, but your priority quickly shifts to procuring enough food and powerful weapons to make it out alive.

Combat is a curious beast: mouse wheel forward to thrust, click to swipe and mouse wheel back to overhead slash. Enemies will feign lunges and backstep to avoid you, so depth perception and timing is key to survival. Resource management becomes tougher later on as the areas become more and more maze-like and due tot he lack of a map, starvation becomes an issue unless you get lucky with the branching paths you choose or make use of clever savepoints to re-load.

Make sure you re-ignite your torch frequently, because the last thing you want is to be lost without a light source. Thankfully, the flicker of a flame is never too far.

Music is used to great effect to really enhance the creepy ambience and feeling of isolation, but it does become a little repetitive when it becomes apparent you have been listening to the same background track for hours.
